Mary Piepho: The Defensive Force Behind Northside's Dominant Season

By Coach Rob DiMauro

Mary Piepho has been a key defensive piece for a Northside Rams program that quietly put together one of the more complete seasons in Alabama girls flag football.

Northside finished the year 19-2 overall with a perfect 6-0 region record, establishing themselves as one of the top teams in the state. They weren't just winning, they were controlling games. The Rams outscored opponents 585 to 146 on the season, and during stretches of the year, their defense was giving up barely anything week to week.

That defensive identity is where Piepho fits in.

The type that changes how offenses call the game.

As a rusher, she's the type that changes how offenses call the game. She's not just coming downhill with speed, although that shows up immediately. What stands out is how she applies pressure. She understands angles, closes space quickly, and forces quarterbacks to make decisions before they're comfortable. In flag, that's everything.

A lot of players chase stats. Players like her create disruption. There's a difference. You see it in timing getting thrown off, reads getting rushed, and offenses playing faster than they want to.

Her all-area selection reflects that kind of impact. That recognition usually comes from consistent pressure over the course of a season, not just highlight plays.

Northside's success this year wasn't by accident either. They climbed to #18 in Alabama and #305 nationally in MaxPreps rankings, which puts them firmly in the upper tier of programs, especially considering how quickly the sport is growing.

From an evaluation standpoint, Piepho fits exactly what that kind of team needs defensively. High motor, closes fast, and plays with urgency. No wasted movement.

Leadership that shows up.

There's also a leadership component that shows up. From team context, she was part of a very small senior group, helping anchor a roster that leaned younger in spots. That matters more than people realize. Teams that win consistently usually have a couple players setting the standard every day. She was one of those.

She's made the decision to continue her athletic career at Chipola College on the softball side, which aligns with her long-term path. But her impact on the football field shouldn't get overlooked.

For Northside, she wasn't just another piece. She was part of the reason that defense became a strength, and why that team was able to stack wins the way it did.
